To make a gemstone shaped bottle and cap. Both parts needed to have the appearance of a metal band enclosing a gemstone. Since we were handing the program turnkey, we needed to consider the aesthetic, the packaging manufacturing process and the full assembly process. Not only was this concept difficult to achieve with glass and plastic, but decoration on all substrates needed to match each other.
We engineered the cap to be a two-piece cap. The gemstone being made of suryln and the outer “metal” casing molded in PP. This allowed for easy decoration on the PP band as it could be metalized gold while the surlyn piece was molded in a custom purple. Once these parts were snapped into place, the metallic band really popped and looked like real metal. Then, the glass was sprayed to match the purple cap and we needed to mask off parts of the glass in order to achieve the metallic outer casing decoration. Once we were finished, it looked like a cohesive package and from outside appearance, it looks like a true piece of jewelry.
